Stories and experiences about travelling, whether it be interstate, to or from Australia as someone living with HIV.

Talkabout Online Travel Edition

The next edition of Talkabout invites your stories and experiences about travelling, whether it be interstate, to or from Australia as a tourist, on business, a migrant or a refugee - as someone living with HIV. We're looking for your stories and experiences of travelling while keeping yourself well and comfortable when HIV is along for the ride!

  • Between planning your trip, juggling time zones with HIV antiretroviral (ART) medication, getting specific immunisations or vaccinations, finding the right travel or health insurance, and dealing with a different culture, language, and climate there's plenty that travellers living with HIV need to consider. What are your strategies and tips when travelling overseas as a person living with HIV (PLHIV)?
  • A number of countries restrict entry for PLHIV. If you have ever visited a destination where customs, laws or immigration regulations around HIV are unclear, share your experience of travelling, getting visas, and how that was for you. Your story could be useful for someone else living with HIV and planning an overseas trip.
  • Travelling interstate within Australia can also prove tricky and unexpected at times. Running out of medication, finding a doctor to prescribe your ARTs and chasing up prescriptions can add extra stress and worry when you're out of your comfort zone. Whether travelling overseas or interstate, we also need to plan for the unexpected. Share your experiences of managing the unexpected when even the best of plans go awry.
  • Share your story about how cultural or social differences, language barriers or food, air, water or insect borne diseases have impacted on your health, travel plans or experiences.

If you're uncomfortable using your own name, you can write using a pseudonym (a fictitious name) instead. We can help you edit your story so any identifying details are changed.

If you have a HIV and travel-related story but no time to write, call Craig on (02) 9206-2177 to share your story and we'll write it up in collaboration with you.

All articles accepted by the Editorial Advisory Group for publication are eligible for a $40 Woolworths voucher. Articles must be between 500-800 words and written by a person living with HIV or directly impacted by HIV in some form. Decisions by the Editorial Advisory Group is final.

Deadline: 5pm Friday 20 March 2020
