From April 2017, health communications within the Australian Government Healthcare system will be strengthened with significant benefits for people living with HIV (PLHIV) who have a MyHealth Record and their healthcare team in the public health system.

Over the next 12 months, public hospital pathology reports will be shared with the MyHealth Record and these will be immediately available to PLHIV and members of their healthcare team as the new system is rolled out.

Additionally, the NSW Health state-wide clinical information system called ‘HealtheNet’ will also be enhanced with addition of pathology results. NSW Health staff will have access to these vital pathology test results through the HealtheNet Clinical Portal.

Pathology results influence around 70 per cent of treatment conversations and decisions between patients and their doctors. This major step reduces the barriers to clinical information exchange by reducing the time it currently takes for NSW GPs, HIV specialists and hospital staff to access or locate copies of PLHIV pathology results, as well as avoiding doubling up and unnecessary testing. This also means PLHIV who have a MyHealth Record will be able to access more responsive health care treatment decision-making with their healthcare teams. Private pathology laboratories will gradually connect over the next few years to the MyHealth Record system also accessible through the HealtheNet Clinical Portal.

Pathology results marked ‘sensitive’ will be ‘padlocked’ in the HealtheNet Clinical Portal and not sent to the MyHealth Record, These include a range of sensitive testing results including HIV and other notifiable sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

PLHIV with a MyHealth Record have the right to request that information from a particular hospital test is not sent to your MyHealth record and NSW Health is obliged to follow this request and you also can set access codes to restrict who sees your record.
