SURVEY: What do we need to ensure our dignity and health as we age with HIV into the future?

By 2020 approximately 5,000 Australian people living with HIV will be aged 65+ and eligible to apply for Aged Care services. A further 7,700 will be eligible over the next 10 years. We want to ensure people living with HIV (PLHIV) have the opportunity to have a safe, healthy and dignified old age, and to receive the support services we need, when and where we need them.

In 2019, the Australian Government is holding a Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety which will provide PLHIV, our partners, carers, family and friends, HIV service providers and Aged Care services a rare opportunity to tell the Australian Government about the current and future Aged Care service needs of PLHIV in all Australian states and territories.

We will be making a submission to the Royal Commission before September 2019 to provide qualitative and quantitative data on the following:

  • What are your preferences about where you get Aged Care support and services (eg., at home, in a residential Aged Care facility, in another type of facility/model of care).
  • How can Aged Care services be best provided to PLHIV with neuro-cognitive disorders?
  • Are the current quality of Aged Care services acceptable, or do they need to be improved?
  • Do Aged Care services meet the current and future needs of PLHIV in Australia?
  • Are there PLHIV who need Aged Care services, but are ineligible (for example, PLHIV under age 65 years)?
  • If there is evidence of mistreatment, abuse or discrimination of PLHIV in the Aged Care service system, what does this look like and how does it impact on our lives?
