hiv

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can be passed through skin to skin contact, usually during sexual activity. Unfortunately, HPV also has a risk of causing small cell changes, called precancers which can develop into cancer. HPV is a known risk factor for developing almost all cervical cancers.

For women and people living with HIV who have a cervix, the risk of developing cervical cancer is roughly five times higher than people who are HIV-negative. Therefore, it is recommended they have a cervical screening test every three years.

Our Factsheet: HIV & your Cervix offers some suggestions and strategies for women and people who have a cervix living with HIV, to take care of their cervical health, as well as how and when to get a cervical screening test.
