For Tony, “starting a new chapter” meant looking at other parts of his health rather than focusing on HIV. With professional help, he dealt with his depression and anger. He was able to find new interests and focus on finding ways to rebuild his life. He learned new skills and can now offer people a service.

Tony: I got a little too absorbed in HIV and realised I needed help in other parts of my life. So, I went into psychotherapy and paid attention to why I was upset and angry and who was making me upset and angry. Along the way, I also realised I needed to rebuild my life and I needed new skills to do that. So, I’ve done two or three years of TAFE and now I’m able to write computer programs. To dwell on HIV all the time is a big mistake.

Depression and anxiety are overlooked by your doctor because it’s seen as part and parcel of your diagnosis. If you’re worried about depression ask your GP for a referral to see a counsellor.

  • Sometimes we need to get some professional help to deal with our fears, anger or depression. Your GP can advise you on what is available through Medicare.
